Sutton Place sits along the East River, from 53rd to 59th Street, from First Avenue to the river. It’s a small neighborhood, six blocks from north to south, with roughly 10,000 people living here. You’re only a few blocks from Grand Central, but closer to the river you’ll see less traffic, prewar buildings and tree-lined streets. The East Midtown Greenway, which opened at the end of 2023, added a new stretch of walking space along the East River. Sutton Place was originally part of Avenue A. In 1875, developer Effingham B. Sutton built a row of brownstones here, and the street was renamed Sutton Place a few years later. By the 1920s, it had become one of the city’s most established residential areas. Today, you’re walking distance from the Upper East Side and Midtown, with restaurants and shops just a few avenues away.
